A Contemporary, 2026 by Ballantine, 464 Pages
Note: This features a character previously featured in My Sister’s Keeper but it is not a sequel. There are spoilers for the ending of that book contained in this book, so proceed with caution.
What I Didn’t Like:
- Content Warning: discussions of loss related to September 11th, postpartum depression and psychosis, suicide and suicidal thoughts or actions, adultery, sexual assault, assault, and medical dismissal
- Long chapters. Not inherently bad, as there are pause points, but worth noting.
- The ending leaves a few big questions to linger. This is done on purpose but it still leaves you with them, which can be frustrating for some readers.
What I Did Like:
- Instantly you connect with these characters and the story feels realistic. That’s important because, Picoult fans know, you’re about to go on an emotional journey with them.
- No one writes characters the way Picoult does. Every single one of these characters felt real. The emotions were evident and strong. This book positively SINGS with unique perspectives and strong emotion. You won’t read this one and feel lackluster about anything.
- As always with Picoult, the research is extensive and well done. It rings through the story and in every aspect, making it obvious that everything in these pages is possible.
Who Should Read This One:
- Fans of hard-hitting contemporary story with emotional punch.
