2026 Book Review: Off the Page

by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer

YA Fantasy, 2015 by Ember, 356 Pages

Note: This is a sequel and you do need to read them in order to understand what’s going on. Start with Between the Lines for the biggest enjoyment.

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Content Warning: cancer, death of an animal
  • The characters all feel like cookie cutter characters here. Even when they attempt to take a stab at changing their destiny or growing as a person, it sort of falls flat. I was disappointed in the arcs this time around.
  • Likely unpopular opinion here, I didn’t like the ending. It seemed too happily-ever-after, if that makes sense. It took something that felt almost realistic and then veered off into ridiculous. I get the appeal but I think it fell flat.

What I Did Like:

  • l adored the first book in this series but I did think it needed a more realistic ending. So diving back into the world and taking another look at how things may have gone wrong with the real part of the happily-ever-after was a nice idea.
  • A great voice. It’s funny and sometimes emotional. There are a lot of good lines in here and the audiobook is especially well done.
  • The message delivered at the end about following your own story was well done.

Who Should Read This One:

  • Fans of the first one, especially those that felt like it needed a little more realism chucked at that ending.

My Rating: 3 Stars

  • This one was hard to rate. It’s not for everyone with its cliche fairy tale characters and how it tries to pull in the real world but in unrealistic ways. It’s very niche, but the right reader will adore it!
