2026 Book Review: The Stranger in Her House

by John Marrs

A Mystery/Thriller, 2024 by Thomas & Mercer, 353 Pages

What I Didn’t Like:

  • The emotional connection feels a bit weak at the start of the book, which affects how you feel about the characters.
  • The first twist in the book was mildly predictable. In fact, as you get into the book the twists don’t really surprise you. Things make more sense and you have this sense of “I knew it” but nothing really surprises.
  • One more check in with the main character to wrap up the book would’ve been highly satisfying, but that’s a minor thing.

What I Did Like:

  • The book opens on a genuinely terrifying situation. You can’t think of anything to try that Connie isn’t already trying and you feel frustrated right along with her.
  • The best part of a good thriller is when you catch yourself having to be careful when you say what it’s about because you don’t want to give anything away. This one opens being about one thing and ends up being about something completely different in the best way.
  • The ending is satisfying. You get the answers you were craving plus plenty of things to remain thinking about that sort of linger in your brain. Fun!

Who Should Read This One:

  • Readers who like books full of plot twists.
