A Horror, 2025 by Berkley, 325 Pages
What I Didn’t Like:
- The horror aspects of this book could’ve been a bit bigger, lingered a bit longer. That’s me being picky.
- Clio is a bit self absorbed. I can see this bothering readers who like a main character who is the best part of us. Clio is not that character. She’s dark, selfish, and spoiled. She knows she’s all those things and doesn’t care. It can be a lot.
- Not enough of a resolution. There’s definitely an attempt made, one with many of the elements you crave. But it’s not perfect.
What I Did Like:
- The voice right from the beginning is captivating. You are pulled into the story right away and feel connected to this main character. It’s well done and feels realistic.
- The spiral of the main character is truly brilliant. She reads differently in chapter one than she does in chapter 15, for example. It’s a brilliant highlight of what is happening in her world.
- The role of the sisters in this one is solid. They read like real sisters. There’s a moment where Clio says her sister means it when she says she loves her as much as she means it when she says she hates her. That’s so perfect. I loved it.
Who Should Read This One:
- Fans of haunted house style stories with unreliable main characters who are struggling with life.
