What I Didn’t Like:
- There are some characters in this book who have unfortunate (and frustrating) reactions to the main character’s desire to present as a girl. While it can be frustrating, it’s realistic and not overdone. Still, it’s there.
- This is a minor thing and likely just because I spent so much time in the classroom, it’s not realistic to assume a Charlotte’s Web unit like this could be this long or this extensive. Standards wouldn’t allow it.
- Again, minor. If the same book is used every year in all 5 years (kinder through fourth) then why would Charlotte dying be a shock to George? She’s heard it before.
What I Did Like:
- First of all, love the title change. Melissa is definitely a more appropriate title and I’m super glad the author recognized that.
- This is an adorable middle grade read about a kid who desperately wants to participate in school, be accepted, and have friends. But unfortunately it has ended up on banned book lists. Read it with kids — it’s a great chance to remind kids to “be a friend like Kelly” and not to be a bully.
- The ending is very well done. Scott’s reaction to finally hearing what’s going on was heartwarming in an unexpected way. Then the zoo trip was a great cap on the story.
Who Should Read This One:
- Contemporary readers. There’s simply not enough middle grade stories featuring trans characters. This one is beautiful and simple to read. It delivers on the message and just tells a cute story.
